01.28.16 - DeLorean Time Machine

Nearly everyone is familiar with the DeLorean DMC-12 that was featured as the Time Machine in the Back to the Future series. There is actually a car club in Southern California with guys who have taken the DeLorean and created their own replicas of the Time Machine. One has the most advanced look with the Mr. Fusion on the back, another has the power hook that was needed to harness the energy of the lightning bolt and another is the original look before any modifications were added to the car. The question you might have is why this hobby for this group of people.

What is amazing about this group is the fact that these guys have taken old parts off items that would have otherwise been discarded to create these replicas that are extremely close to the look of the car from the movies in all its different forms. The small but impressive car club is the perfect blends of three guys who are truly car nerds but also have to be Back to the Future nerds in order to create these three amazing replicas for the world to enjoy and admire.

The DeLorean DMC-12 would have only lived one life if it wasn’t for the movie series and that was a life of failure. John DeLorean was a GM Vice President who saw a need for cars that had a different and much better look than the boxy, cookie cutter shapes that were offered for the early part of the 1980s. Thus came his idea of creating his own company and the DMC-12 which was actually built in Ireland during the few years it was in production. Building in Ireland created another type of change in the world that put different views together.

In Ireland you often saw fighting and hatred between Protestants and Catholics, but when John DeLorean created his plant and had his team working on his vision these differences were set aside to create a collaboration of work for the goal of creating an amazing product. This was only one place you could see these different religious groups working together, which helped the country from a social standpoint as much as an economical one. Unfortunately John DeLorean gave up a little too soon. Had he hung on for a couple more years we might see brand new DeLorean products on the market today competing with the Ferraris and Lamborghinis of the world.

For this amazing little car club, the value of this hobby is in the smiles they produce. Even though these cars were not part of the movie they take them to shows and events wherever organizations will have them and show the cars off to audiences across Southern California. These three guys have said the smiles and admiration they get from the crowds that gather to see these replica cars are all they need to make this a worthwhile hobby and one that they continue to love in cars that are over thirty years old, but make everyone that sees them feel like a kid again.
