Modernizing the Bronco

01.18.17 - Ford Bronco

Yes, we know the new Ford Bronco will arrive in 2020 and be part of the lineup we enjoy on the road but so far we have no idea what this new off road SUV will look like. Expectations are it will be built on the same platform as the Ranger which will arrive in the US in 2019 and if we took a look at the Ranger models on the roads around the world today, we might have an idea of what the Bronco could be, but there hasn’t been any concrete proof to support what this SUV will eventually become.

As a model that’s going to compete directly with the Jeep Wrangler in the market, the new Bronco needs to have similar features to the Wrangler when it rolls off the line and one of those features that’s extremely important is the ability to remove the roof. When you look at the older models of the Bronco, these came with a removable roof just like the Wrangler, and gave you the open air, wind in your hair feeling when you’re driving. Today the Wrangler continues to offer this feature and is already planned to have a new version of the removable roof that will continue the feature we love.

The new Bronco hasn’t been seen yet, but those who are close to the project have already shared that this SUV will have a design that’s called Air Roof. This roof panel system will snap out and off just like the one on the Jeep models that we know and love. This snap out system is used on the current models of the Renegade and is expected to be what the new Wrangler will have in place of the soft canvas snap on and off roof that’s currently in use.

Other considerations for Ford is whether or not this new Bronco will be offered with both two door and four door models or just the four doors. Previous reports told us the Bronco was likely going to be an four door and mimic the current Ford Everest found in other countries, but right now we know so little about the upcoming Bronco that it’s hard to say whether the often lauded SUV will return to its former glory as both a two and four door model, or only be offered in the family friendly version that seems more practical.

If the Bronco is going to be a direct competitor to the Jeep Wrangler it will need to be offered in both models in order to give the competition a run for their money. Otherwise, the two door Wrangler will still soldier on without any direct competition in the US market at all. Hopefully, Ford will realize this and give us what we want, the choice between two and four doors as well as the removable roof panels that are needed to ensure we have the vehicle that’s right for us to enjoy the ride on and off the paved roads.
