New Hyundai Genesis will get Turbo

The Genesis has been the bold entry into the luxury line for Hyundai, something that few thought was even possible a decade ago. To bolster the growth of the sedan, they are adding a twin-turbo V-6 engine to the mix to entice those who love power but don’t necessarily want the cost (and social) baggage associated with driving a big V-8.

The new engine will be comparable to the current V-8 engine that produces 420HP with its 5.0 liters. There is no indication when Hyundai dealers and drivers will see it, but Automotive News believes it will be for the 2017 or 2018 models.

“We’re going to go forward more broadly with that in the portfolio,” said Dave Zuchowski, CEO of Hyundai Motor America. “You’re going to see smaller displacement, more use of turbocharging. A lot of it is weight-related, all of it is CAFE-related.”

This isn’t just about the consumers. The Korean carmaker is shooting to exceed regulatory requirements that are designed to protect the environment.
