09.22.16 - 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback

The Honda Civic is one of the favorites on the market and it’s easy to see why. This is a car that throughout its history has been an affordable small car with the dependability we want to have in a car and the sporty look that attracts a market full of younger drivers. Over the past four decades the Civic has been the car more people choose when they want something to drive that is fun and reliable and a car that can give them the feel they want from behind the wheel.

While the last generation of the Civic was far from exciting, the most recent redesign for 2016 in the sedan has already given us a car that appears to be much better than before with more features and the style we want to enjoy, but it was presented without a hatchback mate for us to admire. Thankfully Honda didn’t waste a lot of time figuring out if they could offer a hatchback and brought the concept model to the Geneva Motor Show for us to have a look at, but what we’ve really been waiting for is the production model, which is now ready to go.

While the car has been spotted ahead of its official debut being loaded to come to the US, it’s time to see what this car will bring to the table. The engine that makes its home in the Civic Hatchback will be a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 174 horsepower and 162 lb.-ft. of torque. This will be offered in the LX, EX and EX-L with the Sport and Sport Touring models receiving a power boost via the high flow center mounted exhaust system. This boost brings you up to 180 horsepower to give you a bit more from under the hood.

There will be two transmission choices that can be made. Either a CVT automatic or a six-speed manual will be available to give you the shifting you want. The expected fuel mileage is 31 city/40 hwy for the CVT giving you a car that’s easy to live with when it comes to fuel efficiency. The hatchback will look familiar for anyone who has already checked out the Civic sedan, except for the back end. There will be 36-inches of rear seat leg room to make it one of the roomier hatchbacks on the market while providing one of the largest cargo areas behind the seats.

This hatchback will have all of the active safety features offered that you find on the other Civic models. This includes collision mitigation, forward collision warnings, lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise controls and you get to enjoy the connectivity of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in this car.

As these cars are loaded and ready to make the trek across the Atlantic from the Honda plant in Swindon, UK we will get to enjoy them on our market very soon. The production model will be on display at the Paris Auto Show along with a new Honda Civic Type R Concept to give us a pair to admire and enjoy.
