12.28.16 - Ford GT

Even though most of us never get to drive the top models on the market, those that do want to have everything possible in their cars. This is also the place where automakers put their best engineering and most advanced systems to make sure we can seriously admire the vehicles. There is a supercar that will enter the market in a short while that has taken the idea of a suspension and made it even better than before by offering you settings that are outrageous. This car is the new Ford GT and it rides on a suspension that’s mild mannered on regular roads, but superhero like on the track.

As with any other supercar on the market, the Ford GT offers an active, adjustable multi-mode suspension to give you what you expect from this amazing car. The beauty of what the GT offers lies underneath and starts with the springs. What Ford has done is take two identical col springs and stacked them on top of each other for the normal performance, which essentially creates one large spring with only half the spring rate as one of the two would have on their own.

This may sound a bit ludicrous, but what Ford has done is pure genius. During the Normal model or Wet drive mode these two springs stay active and stacked for the drive and the Sport mode continues this way as well only firming up the dampers during the drive. These are the three modes that are expected to be used on normal roads and are made to give you a comfortable drive in a vehicle that’s right on the road and made for the track. You’ll be able to enjoy the fun of the drive but know you have a smooth ride with these modes in your GT.

Once you get to the track, the fun begins. As you select Track or Vmax modes on the system you have one less spring as one spring on each wheel is locked out which doubles the spring rate on each wheel. The ride height then drops by nearly two inches to give you a ground clearance of only 2.75 inches and the dampers move to their firmest setting. The Track mode causes the aerodynamics to maximize the downforce on the vehicle and the Vmax model allows the wing, chassis and splitters to stay in their low drag settings.

This dual suspension setup of the Ford GT allows you to enjoy a car that’s capable of performing at its best on the road or at the track. You can even soften the Normal mode with the Comfort button that will give you and even smoother ride on the road. This is the first time we’ve seen a suspension like this in a car and it’s going to be something we marvel at as Ford brings it to market and offers us the ride and enjoyment we want from a car that’s built for the speed we’ve been looking for.
