2024 Lexus GX: Redefined Luxury & Off-Road Capabilities

The next generation of the Lexus GX is heading our way for the 2024 model year. This is the first generational change in 14 years for this luxury SUV.

Lexus is going down the same path as Toyota, which is certainly expected. The new version of the GX arrives in 2024, and the biggest change is the movement away from the V8 engine and toward a turbocharged V6. This brutish SUV hasn’t changed much in its second generation, but this new third-gen model proves to show a new driving style while remaining the off-road, fun, and active SUV that we’ve come to love.

Should we lament the loss of the V8?

Maybe we should feel a little sad that the new GX no longer includes a V8 engine, but only for a moment. The 4.6-liter V8 is out, and a new 3.4-liter turbocharged V6 is in. This is currently the only available powertrain, but we should see additional powertrains offered in the near future. This new engine delivers 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, which makes it much more powerful than the V8. This new turbo-six mates to a standard 10-speed automatic transmission, providing much better shifting during the drive.

The GX is still an off-road luxury SUV

The new Lexus GX brings a new powertrain but some old-school off-roading prowess. This SUV includes a full-time 4WD system and an electronically controlled transfer case. A new Overtrail trim has been added to the lineup, giving this Lexus SUV a locking rear differential and 33-inch tires. After 14 years, the GX receives a new platform, which is the same TNGA-F build found under the Lexus LX 600 and Toyota Sequoia. This means the GX has not gone away from the body-on-frame built and enjoys a ladder frame and double wishbone suspension at the front with a multi-link system in the rear.

This Lexus SUV brings new style

The grille found in the GX is smaller than before, and the front end brings thin LED headlights that are placed high on the front to keep them from being damaged during off-road adventures. The body has a squared-up look, giving it a more imposing style than before. The new GX is large than the outgoing model with a longer body and wheelbase. The length is 2.75 inches more than the outgoing version, and the wheelbase has grown by 2.36 inches. This makes for a much more comfortable feeling inside this new large luxury SUV.

A fantastic new interior awaits you in the 2024 GX

The cabin area of the new Lexus GX is fully revised. You’ll find a large touchscreen that measures 14 inches and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. These side-by-side screens are standard in this new SUV, giving you the high-tech approach you want to enjoy during your drive. Lexus continues to bring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility along with physical buttons for the climate and audio controls. These buttons might be a nod to the challenges of changing settings while off-roading.

In addition to the screens and controls in the front, you’ll find more comfort in the cabin with a larger third-row seat area. This Lexus SUV also includes 12 cupholders, six illuminated USB-C charge ports, and more interior storage space than the previous version.

An expected part of the standard packaging is a full slate of active safety features. These items include lane-departure alert with steering assist, road-sign assist, proactive driving assist, radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, and a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection.

Six great trim levels for your driving pleasure

The new Lexus GX comes in six different trims starting at the Premium level and ending at the Luxury Plus trim. You’ll also find the new Overtrail and Overtrail Plus versions which add off-road-specific features to make your time in the wilderness more enjoyable. These two trims include some of the items mentioned above while also riding on a wider stance than the standard GX trims.

Towing made easy in this Lexus SUV

When you need to take lots of gear or a boat with you to your weekend recreational spot, you’ll be glad to have the towing capacity of this new Lexus GX. The Premium, Premium Plus, Overtrail, and Overtrail Plus models can tow up to 8,000 pounds. The Luxury trim can tow up to 6,990 pounds, and the Luxury Plus trim offers 6,780 pounds of towing power for you.

Could this new 2024 Lexus GX become the right luxury SUV for you to drive? One test drive might be all you need to know for sure.
