Better Fuel Mileage in the Nissan Frontier

One of the midsize trucks that remained in the market during the time when other models had left is the Nissan Frontier. This little truck continued to be a popular model because it came to us as a vehicle that offered the lowest price in the market while giving us the capability needed. The fuel mileage offered for the Frontier has been a subject that has mostly been overlooked because of the price, but those days might be behind this truck. A new engine is being used to give us the fuel mileage needed.

The New Powertrain of the Frontier

The latest version of the Nissan Frontier can be enjoyed with a new 3.8-liter V6 engine which is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission to give us the drive we want to enjoy. This powertrain was presented to us at the Chicago Auto Show to give us a look at what the new Frontier will have. When compared to the previous V6 powertrain, the new model gives you 18 city/24 hwy mpg while the outgoing model was only good for 16 city/23 hwy mpg. The ride with this new powertrain is much smoother and refined with four additional gears in the transmission.

The Smaller Powertrain is Still Offered in this Nissan

You can still drive a Nissan Frontier with the four-cylinder engine if you want the lowest price for your drive. The smaller engine can give you 19 city/23 hwy mpg when you have the manual transmission, but if you don’t know how to drive a stick shift, you’ll have 17 city/22 hwy mpg when you have the automatic transmission included. This means the smaller powertrain with the manual transmission beats the new V6 by only one mpg while the automatic loses out by one mpg, making the decision one of power for you.

Compared to Other Midsize Trucks

The numbers for the Nissan Frontier are now in line with the rest of the midsize trucks that you’ll find. The Ford Ranger is the only truck that has only a four-cylinder engine and it brings you a combined result of 23 mpg while the Chevrolet Colorado is a bit of a wild car with a diesel engine that can give you the 23 mpg you want. All other brands use a V6 in the lineup, including the Chevy to give you more power and similar fuel mileage numbers when you take a drive.
