We already have the N sub-brand from Hyundai and now Ioniq is going to be one as well when the Ioniq 5 EV SUV arrives later this year.

When the Ioniq 5 arrives in the fall it will give us four different models that carry this name, which means we have a sub-brand. The Ioniq 5 will be the first of the four to be large enough to be called an SUV and to give you an idea of its size, this new model will be similar in size to the current Tucson.

The Ioniq Sub-Brand Adds More Electricity

The Hyundai Ioniq seemed like a bit of a boutique model from the brand when it arrived. This car appeared to be made to pacify those asking for greener vehicles. When it first appeared on the market, we had a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, and an all-electric version which gave us three similar small cars that could make green driving easier.

Adding the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 to the mix gives us an EV that has true potential. This model will be an SUV that’s large enough to tote a small family around, offers you room for your gear, and it brings you the benefits of an excellent electric driving range. This new model is kick-starting the drive toward having 23 models sharing the Hyundai EV platform by 2025.

The Platform is Flexible

The platform being used for the Ioniq 5 is called the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) and it allows for various battery, motor, and drivetrain combinations to be used. The basic version of the Ioniq 5 will be a rear-drive single-motor set that has a 58-kWh battery pack. The power you’ll find comes to 215 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. If you desire, this model can be upgraded to an AWD version that gives you 232 horsepower and 446 lb.-ft. of torque.

Charging is Faster in the Hyundai Ioniq 5

A new patented charging system for the platform of the Ioniq 5 is being used. This system allows for 400 or 800-volt charging without special adapters. This translates to recharging of up to 80 percent of the range in 18 minutes, which means shorter stops for you when you want to take this vehicle out and enjoy it on a long road trip.

An Interesting Cabin Setup

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 may look like it’s small, even though it’s close to the same size as the Tucson, but the wheelbase is longer than the Palisade. This length translates to a large cabin with plenty of room for five passengers inside the cabin. This SUV is very close to the 45 Concept that was featured a couple of years ago.
