05.21.16 - Sonora Desert

When it comes to desert driving, unless you are racing across it for a trophy, you want to have something that is going to see you through to the end. Some deserts are vast expanses of nothingness that will be nearly impossible to cross if you are stuck in the middle of them and in the Middle East nearly the entire region is a large desert area that has little vegetation and nothing but sand dunes as far as the eye can see. For some that sounds like and exciting place to ride but for others this sounds more like certain death.

Those that feel this is an exciting place to drive just might have one of a select few vehicles to handle the task. Certainly we’ve all heard of the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6 that can handle the task and for a few drivers this is the choice they make, but there is another vehicle that now has just as many wheels on it and is made to handle the treacherous drive of the Middle Eastern desert so that you can end up at your destination and simply need to refuel to head back home.

This vehicle is a modified version of the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 which is an older model Land Cruiser and has always been regarded as one of the most capable off road vehicles on the market. Strangely though, the Land Cruiser hasn’t always been made with six wheels- actually, it’s never been made with six wheels, at least not by Toyota. that makes you wonder how this vehicle is given the additional wheels and in what capacity can this SUV compete with the G63 6×6 which is a phenomenal beast to carry you across the desert.

This new version of the old Land Cruiser is built from a collaboration between NSV, a Dubai automotive accessory company, and Multidrive, an Australian company that modifies Land Cruisers. With this collaboration the Land Cruiser is modified to have a second rear axle and uses a supercharged 4.0-liter V6 engine that can give you as much as 400 horsepower through a five-speed transmission. Not only does this pairing offer these Land Cruisers, but you could purchase one with a diesel engine or a single cab body style depending upon what you want to have in your desert crossing beast that is built to take you anywhere you want to go.

With one of these Land Cruisers in your arsenal there is no doubt you would be able to handle any job that comes your way and cross any area you choose. Even if you don’t want this Land Cruiser for crossing rough terrain, it would be awesome to have one and be able to know you could cross just about any rough patch of earth you wanted in your amazing late model Land Cruiser. This is certainly a great way for these two companies to come together and take a Land Cruiser and make it even better than before.
