5 Cars With Record-Breaking Miles

Most people think of 100,000 miles as high mileage on a vehicle, while some vehicles become known for routinely making it to 200,000 miles. When you think of used cars with such high mileage, you probably think of cars that are in fairly mediocre condition. But imagine a car with double and triple that mileage that’s also in good condition. Let’s take a look at five cars with the most mileage.

1966 Volvo P1800 – 3.25 Million Miles

The Guinness World Record vehicle for the most miles is a 1966 Volvo P1800 owned by Irv Gordon. Gordon achieved an impressive mileage count of just over 3 million miles in 2014. As you might expect, his secret to the car’s longevity was regular oil changes, adherence to the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule, and keeping the car clean. Most of the miles on this car were racked up by long road trips across the United States. Gordon continued to drive the car until he passed away a few years ago at age 77.

1976 Mercedes-Benz 240D – 2.85 Million Miles

Coming in at number two on this list of cars with impressive high miles is a stylish Benz that belonged to a Greek taxi driver. The car hit an impressive mileage count in 2004. It’s not hard to imagine how the car racked up so many miles as a taxi vehicle, but Mercedes-Benz reached out to the owner to trade a brand new C-Class for the old 240D that is now in a museum. The automaker recognized the car as the longest-running vehicle in its history.

1979 Volvo 245 GL – 1.63 Million Miles

Volvo is known for making durable cars that last a long time, so it’s no surprise that there’s another Volvo out there with a record number of miles. This one is the Volvo 245 GL from 1979. The 245 GL was in production until 1993 and was largely unchanged during that time. The car is a large station wagon style and is known for its longevity if proper maintenance is followed. This first-year model was used by a Finnish logistics firm as a company car and eventually racked up its impressive 1.63 million miles.

1963 Plymouth Fury – 1.62 Million Miles

At number four is another taxi vehicle owned by a man in Montreal. The owner took extremely good care of the 1963 Plymouth Fury and he estimates that he ferried about 800,000 passengers around the city in his car. In 1999, he nearly hit the Guinness World Record for high mileage at the time, but the Fury was unfortunately hit by a truck and totaled. Its owner was unhurt.

1983 Lincoln Town Car – 1.3 Million Miles

This old Lincoln Town Car might be the most comfortable car on the list. With a pair of bench seats that might double as your grandmother’s couch, this Town Car racked up 1.3 million miles by driving across the country multiple times. The owner claims he got about 22 MPG with the huge V8 engine and that it never broke down. He also maintained it meticulously by going to a Lincoln dealership for service.
Other honorable mentions for vehicles that have reached a million miles include a 1991 Chevy C1500 Silverado, a 1966 Mercedes-Benz 250SE, a 2006 Chevy Silverado 3500 HD, a 2006 Ford F-250, a 1991 Honda Accord EX, a 1996 Lexus LS 400, a 1989 Saab 900 SPG, a 2007 Toyota Tundra, and a 1964 Porsche 356C.  Don’t be afraid of mileage when looking at used cars!
