The Power of Choice in the Choice of Power

If you’re coming to the Dodge Challenger, power is amongst the foremost topics in your mind. Sure, fuel efficiency, tech flair, and safety features matter. But with a car like the Chally, power is king.

Because you don’t consider one of the most legendary street cars of all time, a Mopar machine that has helped define American muscle and been destroying the quarter mile for decades, without first considering what kind of motor you want motivating you.

So let’s break down what kind of power you’re looking at with each of the modern Challenger’s trim levels, so you can best choose your weapon.

The Most Insane Engine Ever Produced

Let’s start at the top, with the biggest, baddest, and most powerful American production motor ever conceived. That is, the supercharged 6.2-liter high output Hemi V8.

You’ll find this unbelievable 707 pound-feet-of-torque producing powerplant beneath the hood of the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye, where it delivers 797 horsepower to the wheels, and in the SRT Super Stock, where it can make 807 earth-quaking horses.

Supercharged and Ready to Roll

Open the hood of an Challenger SRT Hellcat and you’ll find the Supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8 that makes 717 horses and 656 pound-feet of torque.

Because what’s the only thing that can make a Hemi even more dominant? Slapping a supercharger on there.

This was the motor that kickstarted it all just a few short years ago, when Dodge announced that they were selling a factory motor capable of making in excess of seven-hundred horses.

The Classic

There is perhaps no contemporary motor that is more revered than the 392 Hemi V8. It’s something of a kin to the legendary 426 Hemi of yesteryear, the motor that dominated the streets and the NASCAR tracks of the late 1960s and early 70s.

Delivering 485-horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque, you can find the 392 in the Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack (which now comes with the optional Shaker package, which is almost equally as legendary at the 426).

Efficient Performance

The 5.7-liter Hemi V8 is one of the most efficient performance motors available anywhere today.

Standard on all R/T Challenger models, it delivers 375-horsepower to the wheels yet has an amazing fuel-saving feature called MDS that can switch its usage from eight to four cylinders when you’re looking to up those MPGs.

Base but Not Basic

The base model engine that you’ll find in all SXT and GT Challenger models is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 that combines with a TorqueFlite eight-speed tranny to deliver a thick 303-horsepower to your wheels.

303 horses on a base-model V6? That’s why the Dodge Challenger is the Challenger. Because even the smallest motor can still outperform most.
